This incredible book by Czech author Milan Kundera, is one that can be frequently related to. It relates to the philosophical idea of 'lightness', and follows the theme of love and being mere haphazard coincidences that could or could not have happened. It follows the lives of 5 main characters:
Tomas, an infidelity addicted surgeon who sees love and sex as two seperate entities. although he is associated with many other women, he only really loves his wife.
Tereza: Tomas's wife, is aware of his affairs and constantly blames herself for them.
Sabina, a lover and the closest friend of Tomas's. She disregards the idea of 'Kitsch' and expresses her desire to have her ashes thrown into the wind.
Franz, another of Sabina's lovers. He eternally seeks to escape his 'kitsch' wife, Marie Claude.
Karenin, The beloved dog of Tomas and Tereza. Throughout the novel he brings them together with his 'smile'
Overall, the characters are ones in which likenesses to yourself can be found, I slowly became very attached to them. I was sorry to see the book come to an end- but be warned, it can be a real tear-jerker! Definitely one to re-read in the future, and would recommend it to everyone who likes a deep but rewarding novel!
